RAFTING AND KAYAKINGFrom most descriptions of
Tibet it is hard to believe that Tibet is home to a large number of
spectacular rivers. Mt Kailash, in the west of Tibet is the source of
the subcontinent's four greatest rivers: the Ganges, Indus, Sutlej and
Bramaputra. In the east, the forested land of Kham is home to the source
of the Mekong and the Yangtse, the 2 largest rivers in East Asia. In the
summer months regular rains swell Tibet's rivers and the result is a
surprising number of world class rafting and kayaking rivers. When we design your itinerary we consider seasonal weather patterns, water levels and temperatures, altitude, accessibility, as well as surrounding scenery and cultural sites to ensure that you have the best possible experience on the water. The Tolung ChuThe Tolung Chu is a fun
whitewater adventure only 1 hour from Lhasa. It is a perfect
introduction to whitewater rafting in Tibet. You do not have to be
able to swim, but it is recommended that you are physically fit and
have acclimatized in Lhasa for a few days as you will be required to
paddle and move around the raft. This is our most popular trip for
those that only have a short time in Lhasa

We take a gear boat and say good-bye to the road for four days, carrying our supplies along with us. We access the Reting Tsangpo by its north fork, beginning as a small alpine stream with amazing views of the Nyenchen Thanglha range near Namtso. The North fork enters the main river on day 2 and we paddle big water through incredible alpine juniper forests and past nomad camps. In high water, big volume rapids are interspersed by lazy flat sections and awesome surf waves for kayakers. This is the quintessential Tibetan rafting experience. Its wonderful mix of mountains, nomads, monasteries and whitewater is bound to make this new discovery a classic. Basic Itinerary:

After four days acclimitising and experiencing the sites of Lhasa, we practice our paddling skills on the Tolung Chu before driving to the spectacular Nyenchen Thanglha range. We’ll experience the granduer of Tibet’s second largest salt lake, Namtso before journeying back across the range to the source of the Reting Tsangpo. The Reting is a wonderful four day journey through the home of yaks and nomads to the famous Reting Monastery. We’ll share our campsites with nomads and have ample opportunity to experience their culture and customs. We then visit Tidrum Nunnery and the hotsprings before rafting the Drigung Chu for two days. We return to Lhasa with a day to spare to paddle the famous Yarlung Tsangpo. Basic Itinerary:

The ultimate kayaking experience. In June
2004, Chris Jones and friends pioneered this
classic overland route with a twist. Kayaks
are rarely seen this high in the mountains
but there are a number of superb runs
culminating in the Rong Chu, the river that
drains the north face of Everest. Beginning
in Lhasa we acclimatise and warm up on
several runs near Lhasa. We then drive
through Shigatse to Rongbuk Monastery 7km
from Everest base camp. After exploring
around base camp, we put on the Rong Chu at
around 5000m (which may be the highest
put-in anywhere in the world). We then spend
the next 5 days paddling class 3 and 4
whitewater to the village of Kharta and the
entrance to the infamous Arun River Gorges.
This partial circumnavigation of Everest by
kayak is a truly amazing journey. We spend a
day exploring the spectacular landscape
around Kharta before driving towards Nyalam
and the Nepali border. The monsoon season is
the best time for this expedition as we are
paddling on the dry side of the Himalayas.
You need to be a confident class IV kayaker
to undertake this expedition.

Beginning in Lhasa, we follow the Kongpo Valley out towards the famous region north of the Great Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo. The landscape changes rapidly from Lhasa’s dry plateau to forested lands, then jungle as we descend towards the deepest gorge on earth. Most of Tibet drains into these mighty gorges and the rivers are awesome. We paddle classic runs such as the Druksum Chu, Tong Chu and Parlung Tsangpo, a major tributary of the Po Tsangpo. We can also paddle tributaries of the Mekong, Salween and Yangtse. Expect big volume and continuous, consistent whitewater. You need to be a confident kayaker to challenge this expedition. We custom design the itinerary for this expedition according to the ability and desires of the group. We can easily accomodate intermediate kayakers who want a mix of hiking, exploring and easier kayaking. This expedition can be run from Lhasa to Chengdu, Chengdu to Lhasa or Lhasa to Lhasa.
